Let’s cut straight to it, shall we?
The Key to creating a memorable character is the character not being afraid to be themselves.
That’s it. That’s all you have to do.
I know, I know. It sounds like an oversimplification but hear me out.
The number one thing people are afraid of, besides public speaking, is being themselves unapologetically. When people get around their friends, family, coworkers, etc. they have different personas they wear, where a part of themselves is revealed but never the whole.
It is only when they are alone they can truly be themselves without fear of what other people think or judgment.
Therefore, the key to making a character memorable is having that character be themselves no matter what, and not change despite no one believing in them, hating them, shaming them because their either weird or unorthodox.
Make that character stand out by surrounding them with a bunch of insecure people who pretend to be fine since that dynamic directly reflects our reality anyway. Make it better by having people in that character’s circle doubt and mock them, then, when all is said and done, the character no one believes in rises to the top through hard work, dedication, and perseverance which makes that character inspiring to others around them.
That’s really all there is to it.
The what is simple, it’s the how that requires creativity. It’s the how that’s the fun part.
Alright, that’s my spiel. Til next week. . .
